About a month ago, I invited a bunch of friends over to my place for drinks and catching up on a TV show we all like. Well I also have a new dog that I adopted. Not a puppy, but not an old dog either. We're still working on training... and I guess we needed to work harder, because my dog ate my friend Beth's shoes. They were probably the only "real leather" shoes there and the dog smelled them and just... had his way with them.
I felt bad about it, apologized, and told my friend that she should really understand that if you have something valuable, you have to put it out of reach of a dog. When I said that, she went from being pretty bummed about her shoes (she said they were expensive, they were someone's gift to her) to being pissed off at me.
She said "I've never had a dog before, how would I know that?"
I told her that everyone knows dogs are pretty destructive. She didn't like that answer and left without another word. A few days later, she texted me this:
"Hey, just wanted to talk to you about something. I know you just got [Dogsname] so you haven't had time to train him much, but I would have really appreciated some warning. These shoes were really expensive, they were [Personsname] gift to me, and I feel like the least you could do is pay for at least part of what was destroyed. Here's the link to where he bought them, the price says $750 but he really only paid $645 for them, so I feel like at least $250 would be fair? Let me know."
To say the least, I was shocked. I understand that my dog is the one who caused this to happen, but who goes walking around wearing $500+ shoes?! Who brings them over to a house with a dog and gets upset when the dog acts like a dog!! She kept saying that she has never owned or lived with a dog and that I could have warned her not to put her shoes on the floor, but I think she's being ridiculous.
I texted her back and said "Listen, I'm really sorry that [Dogsname] chewed up your shoes, but I don't really think it's fair for me to have to pay you money for shoes that you didn't even buy. Maybe we can go shopping together soon and I'll help you pick out a new pair and I'll look for whatever coupons or deals are out there. I just can't really afford to pay for shoes that expensive and frankly I'm surprised you'd put that on me as my friend."
Aaaand after that, she apparently sent our thread to the other girls and everyone has decided I'm some big monster and they no longer want to do the TV parties at my place. Honestly, I'm so disappointed in my friends. But I wouldn't be here if I didn't also want a more objective look.
So am I the asshole here?
