My mom dropped her dog off at a local kennel, an hour later she escaped. They kennel never called and my mom left on her flight early the next morning. When she called an hour ago to check in they told her they had lost the dog. In sub zero temps overnight, the dog is likely dead.

So my mom is a wreck and im not sure what to do. She has a small rescue chihuahua-like dog who was dropped off at a kennel at 2:30 yesterday (the 11th) in anticipation of a week long vacation she is taking. Everything seemed fine, she left on her flight today at 6:00 am, and decided to call the kennel around 10 Am to check in on her beloved pooch. after leaving her on hold for a while, the owner answered. He said,"sorry, she escaped about an hour after you dropped her off and we have been looking for her since." THEY NEVER CALLED MY MOM AFTER SHE ESCAPED. I was at her house last night with a good friend of mine and we were literally just sitting around, had we received a call we all would have headed over immediately to look for her, the dog always comes to my mother's voice. They only let her know once she had called them! The thing is this dog is so small it's very unlikely she survived the night, I live in the Northeast and it was sub-zero last nigh, hardly conditions for an 8lb chihuahua to be out in for an extended amount of time. In all likelihood, my moms beloved companion, is dead. She is devastated. she called me in tears this morning and her vacation is pretty much ruined - which is beside the point in the grand scheme of things but still a bummer. I'm just not sure what to do? I want these people to be help accountable for their callous actions, had the proper steps been taken, olive (my moms dog), would likely be warm and safe. Should we contact a lawyer? the local news? These people need to be dealt with so this never happens again. What should I do reddit?

Edit: We live in Maine

Edit II: We have a post up on Maine Lost dog rescue, and a number of other groups with her picture and our phone numbers. My father and I are about to head over to the kennel now to talk with them and look for Olive. I plan on staying in the car while he speaks with them though, I am too angry and upset at the moment and don't want to do or say something stupid. Thank you for the advice so far, it means a lot to both me and my mom.
