Ladies who know how to sew or work in fashion, how can we tell by looking at an item whether or not its over-priced?

My best friend in high school knew how to see everything from shorts to prom dresses and she always told me to always make sure clothes doesn't have single stitching cause it would fall apart easily. She also told me never to spend more than $40 on jeans cause all jeans are extremely similar in material and super easy to sew. But there were things that she thought were worth the money, like she would always squeal when she saw Jimmy choo's lol. Any tips like this? Cause for example with fashion Nova you can tell the clothes are prob made in China and look cheaply made lol. But then like if I look at say Lulu's or revolve I can't tell if it's a rip off or over priced or not :,(
