If you've forgotten to register or§ been improperly removed from the registry (or requested an absentee ballot that you never cast, don't have the right ID, etc., you have a legal right to vote via provisional ballot. Rules for casting a provisional ballot vary by state and can be found here. Often you need to take specific steps before and after you cast your ballot for your ballot to be counted.
EDIT: It's a good idea to request a receipt so that you can follow up with your state's election commission to make sure your ballot is counted.
EDIT2: Added parenthetical remark and struck the comment about forgetting, since for most states it seems not being registered is a common reason provisional ballots are rejected. Thanks to /u/PrimeSignificance for sharing the most common reasons provisional ballots are rejected. Make sure you check all the right boxes to ensure your provisional ballot is accepted.
§ EDIT3: Here's the list of states where you can register on the same day as election day:
-
California
-
Connecticut
-
Colorado
-
District of Columbia
-
Hawaii
-
Iowa
-
Idaho
-
Illinois
-
Maine
-
Minnesota
-
Montana
-
New Hampshire
-
Utah
-
Vermont
-
Wyoming
If you live in a state with same-day registration, you don't have to worry about having missed a deadline. If you forget something you need for your registration on election day, you can fill out a provisional ballot and take care of whatever needs to be taken care of before the deadline to have your provisional ballot counted.
