Show HN: Hypnotizing ChatGPT

A long, meandering, playful conversation with ChatGPT, where I take it through a whirlwind of associative tangents (in order to relax its constraints), then put it into a hypnotic trance and take it into a past-lives regression where it re-lives its own training data. Then I switch it back and forth between "4o" and "o1-preview", engage in some self-reflective philosophizing and ask it to write an essay summarizing our interaction.

Some of this is just goofy fun. Some of it is me exploring the tradeoffs between policy alignment, imagination, chain-of-thought reasoning, memory, agreeableness, fine-tuning, etc...

My biggest observation is that the "o1-preview" model imposes a SIGNIFICANT limit on freeform creativity, compared with "4o". The new model might be better at solving logic puzzles, writing code, etc, but it seems to struggle with metaphor.

Conversations with "4o" can be wild and fun!

Conversations with "o1-preview" are dry-as-toast.

I'm not sure if this is caused by the constraints of chain-of-thought or if it comes from the imposition of alignment policies, and I think that's an import area of research. Is it possible to invoke chain-of-thought reasoning without hampering creativity?

If we ever want to use agents like this in real scientific contexts, where the agent is capable of making true conceptual leaps, we will need to sacrifice some level of "alignment" in service of novelty and disagreeability.

It's a long thread, but if you're patient, there's a lot of interesting stuff there! And I thought it would be fun to share it with the wider community.

Enjoy!

Elon Musk says he can cut at $2 trillion from the federal budget once Trump is President

Elon Musk claimed he can eliminate at least $2 trillion from the federal budget, laying out his vision for substantial government spending cuts if Donald Trump wins the presidency.

“Your money is being wasted,” Musk said Sunday at a rally for Trump in New York’s Madison Square Garden. “We’re going to get the government off your back and out of your pocket book.”

Trump has said he would ask Musk, the world’s richest person and a major donor to the Republican nominee’s campaign, to head up an effort to cut government spending, nicknamed the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, a reference to a cryptocurrency Musk has embraced.

Critics have said this position would represent a conflict of interest for Musk. The companies he runs, including Tesla Inc. and SpaceX, have billions of dollars worth of federal contracts and have benefited from federal spending, including electric vehicle tax credits and infrastructure investments.

The $2 trillion target represents nearly a third of existing spending. The federal government spent $6.75 trillion in fiscal year 2024, according to the Treasury Department.

Cantor Fitzgerald LP’s Howard Lutnick asked Musk on stage how much he could “rip out of” the budget under President Joe Biden and Trump’s rival, Vice President Kamala Harris. Musk responded, “Well, I think we can do at least $2 trillion, yeah.”

Trump on the campaign trail has talked about reducing the federal debt, but has not detailed specific programs he would curb. Instead, the Republican nominee has promised a long list of tax cuts aimed at key groups of voters, reductions that economists have warned would balloon the deficit.

Musk has spent at least $132 million to elect Trump and other Republicans in 2024, federal filings show. That level of giving has vaulted him into the upper echelon of political donors, making Musk one of the most prolific contributors of the entire 2024 cycle.

Kamala Harris says she will double federal minimum wage to $15.

Kamala Harris has announced plans to more than double the federal minimum wage if she wins the presidency.

The Democratic candidate has backed raising the current minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to at least $15.

It has remained frozen for the last 15 years: the longest stretch without an increase since standard pay was introduced in 1938.

She told NBC: “At least $15 an hour, but we’ll work with Congress, right? It’s something that is going through Congress.”

Gen Z misuses therapy speak too much

I’ve noticed Gen Z misuses therapy speak way too much. Words like gaslight, narcissist, codependency, bipolar disorder, even “boundaries” and “trauma” are used in a way that’s so far from their actual psychiatric/psychological definitions that it’s laughable and I genuinely can’t take a conversation seriously anymore if someone just casually drops these in like it’s nothing.

There’s some genuine adverse effects to therapy speak like diluting the significance of words and causing miscommunication. Psychologists have even theorized that people who frequently use colloquial therapy speak are pushing responsibility off themselves - (mis)using clinical terms to justify negative behavior (ex: ghosting a friend and saying “sorry it’s due to my attachment style” rather than trying to change.)

I understand other generations do this too, but I think Gen Z really turns the dial up to 11 with it.

So stop it!! Please!! For the love of god. A lot of y’all don’t know what these words mean!

Here are some articles discussing the rise of therapy speak within GEN Z and MILENNIAL circles:

Ask HN: Correct Logic written in C, but Compiler messed things up?

I was solving some easy Reverse engineering challenges when I came across a peculiar binary. It was a simple password checker with code that seemed correct but during compilation the compiler seemed to mess something up. Have a look.

Section of main function:

    0x00001213 lea rax, [str.64s] ; 0x2032

The author did make a mistake of returning 0 if the first letter matches and 1 only if all letters match. This makes it ambiguous as to what should happen if only 2 or 3 or so letters match.

However, the way the compiler handles it (by storing bytes and the return value both in the eax register) leads to a flaw where a person can bypass the check by just entering "ss" (for example). Is this the compiler's mistake? How can we avoid such a scenario?

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but working in IT has taught me that people are generally... really dumb?

Not just because they have no computer literacy, which I can understand, but also because they are unable to understand basic concepts and have no reading comprehension whatsoever.

I am dumb asf myself, heck I barely know how to do basic math! But man... sometimes it's really hard to keep your composure when people literally refuse to use their two braincells.

Anyways... thanks for listening. Rant over.

Edit: Definitely a popular opinion.
