Ask HN: Reading someone else's code and bug fixing

Hey guys, What is your process of reading a code someone else wrote (particularly in JavaScript) and applying fixes?

I am working on a JavaScript SPA product that is more than a decade old with huge code base and a lot of service integrations.

I am new in the team, sometimes a bug fix (compromising of just 1-2 lines) takes me a couple of hours to finish. Starting from understanding the issue, reading the code pertaining to that area, applying the fix and then testing different use case to make sure the bug is fixed before handing it over to QA.

I want to be efficient and as quick as possible and wondering if you guys share your process of debugging and fixing bugs for big products.

Many modern day mental health issues are heavily influenced by a lack of discipline.

I realise this might be truly unpopular, but I think it is a tough love message that many young adults should hear.

Quick disclaimer: my point is not that mental illness is caused by a lack of discipline in all cases. There are many instances where it doesn't matter how hard you work on it, the outcome will be pathology. But this goes for personality disorders, chemical inbalances resulting in heavy depression, being a victim of severe trauma, etcetera.

But it doesn't apply to all somberness, all burnout complaints, all anxiety, all add/adhd symptoms. Don't shy away from telling people they can tremendously improve their mental health and happiness if they maintain a strict regular schedule of sleep, eating healthy, not consuming alcohol and exercising 6-8 hours a week.

Yes, this takes time, effort, practise, DISCIPLINE. But there is no excuse for not trying. And untill you start trying, i don't think you are taking on the responsibilty for your own well being. Let's be honest about that, instead of only treating you as a victim of circumstances.

++++ Edit:

Let's save everyone some time!

1-- The post specifically states that not all symptomatology is affected by discipline. Yes, your condition might not benefit from healthier living. Running a marathon does not cure PTSD..

2-- Medication can be helpful

3-- Yes, being exhausted from it all makes it difficult to be disciplined. Thats why it specifies trying, not finishing.

4-- Yes, i have in-depth experience on this topic (unfortunately). Your assumption otherwise i find distateful personally.

Guy goes to Doc because his dick is orange.

A guy goes to the doctor because his dick is orange;

Doctor looks at it and say, “yep, it’s orange alright”

Guy says, “why is it orange doc? What could it be?”

Doc thinks for a minute… then asks the guy, “do you work around dyes or paints or anything like that?”

Guy says, “no.”

Doc asks, “Any chemicals or solvents?”

Guy says, “no doc, I don’t even have a job, all I ever do is sit around watching pornos and eating Cheetos.”

A woman calls 911 and paramedics rush her unconscious husband to the hospital

She limps into the ER as the nurses wheel him in on a stretcher, his enormous erection clearly visible under the sheet. The doctor runs some tests and says to her "Ma'am, it appears your husband overdosed on Viagra and is in a coma. How long has he been like this?"

"About 4 days" she replies

"4 days?! Why did you wait until now to get help?"

"I ran out of lube this morning"

Looks like f***ing up here

A man, his wife and a good-looking stranger are stranded on a desert island. The wife quickly loses interest in her husband and begins flirting with the good-looking stranger. The three start to build a watchtower.

The stranger offers to take first watch. While the husband and wife gather driftwood on the sand, the stranger yells, "Hey! No sex on the beach! Get back to work!"

The husband yells back, "We're not having sex!"

Later, the stranger yells out to them again. Again, the husband yells back and corrects him. This happens several times during the stranger's shift.

Finally, the husband's takes his shift in the watch tower. His wife and the good-looking stranger make passionate love on the beach. The husband on watch exclaims, "Wow, it really does look like f**king from up here!"

Ask HN: What Internet decentralization techniques do you think are promising?

I am looking for a topic for my master's thesis. I am mainly interested in networks and the concept of decentralization of the Internet. Do you think of any techniques, besides blockchain and DHT, that are worth exploring in this topic? Has anything in this topic particularly caught your attention recently?

This old man is playing cards and keeps on winning...

He always seems to have an Ace of Spades.

The people around ask, "How is that happening?"

He replies, "I'm wearing my lucky sweater. My wife knitted it for me."

A few plays later, and still, he keeps winning.

Now, everyone accuses him of cheating.

"What's up your sleeve?", they demand.

He pulls up his sleeves, but there is nothing there.

Shaking their heads in disbelief , they continue the game.

The very next hand, the old man plays an Ace of Spades for the win.

The room angrily erupts upon seeing this and yells, "That fucking cardigan!"

Literally zero experience with stocks, but the confidence in these front page posts is overwhelming.

Bought them on Revolut in Ireland. Will buy 3 more before Xmas if this MOASS doesn't happen before then. No idea if there is anything else that I need to do.
