Ask HN: Where to relocate our algotrading project ?

I started a crypto trading project with a friend in March. It has been doing really well. In march of 2020, we invested modest sums of our own money (in the 50k). Today we trade around 1B per day (or 3 to 7% of binance futures volume depending on volatility).

We incorporated a company in July in France. Now, we want to exit France and live somewhere else, both personally and to continue our business. In the past two weeks, we moved to Hungary and I am now seriously questioning if it was a good idea.

Our respective goals in ~1 year: My partner just wants to exit as some point and live another life. I want to create an AI/ML research lab by reinvesting the profits. This has been my plan all along: I started algo-trading with deep learning as a fancy way to raise money to then do AI research.

My criteria for where I want to go:

  - English speaking country
  - Availability of talent in the crypto/trading space (short term) and AI/ML space (long term) for networking and recruiting
  - Not polluted
My partner's criteria:
  - Not France
  - Not Switzerland
  - Good social life
Our common criteria:
  - Good corporate + tax law and economic freedom
  - If possible, not too high cost of living
  - If possible, sea, mountains and/or good weather
Where would you go ?

Ask HN: Did you have early career doubts?

I'm not a bad developer, but to be honest, programming was never my passion. I took CS after high-school for pragmatic reasons.

I spent 5 years in school, got several degrees including an MSc in Computer Science. And I have been working professionally as a developers "software engineer" (big air-quotes) for the past 5 years.

I'm in my (very) late 20s and I can't imagine doing this for the rest of my life. But the only other path seems to be management right now. And that sounds even worse.

I feel like I'm stuck on this path, and stepping out would mean financial ruin. I'm based in Europe, so my salary has been pretty modest.

Is this a regular 30s-life-crises? Did you have similar doubts at this point of your career/life? What did you do?

When I'd tell my friends "my mom works at the hospital", the reply was always "oh is she a nurse?" I was in my 20s before someone said "oh is she a doctor?"

I think this was the big eye-opener for me; the first of many events that showed me the subtle sexism rampant in the world.

I was chatting with friends while my mom was in the kitchen when the "where does she work?" question came up. When I responded and the followup was "is she a doctor?", I distinctly remember my mom setting down what she was working on, looking my friend directly in the eye, and saying "thank you" to her in an utterly serious and sincere tone. I was confused as to why until I asked her about it that evening. It had never occurred to me that time and time again, people just assumed that she wasn't a doctor.

For reference, she wasn't a nurse or a doctor, but the lead tech in the blood lab. Obviously we'd never expect someone to randomly guess that, but the fact that it took over 20 years for someone to guess doctor instead of nurse was, in hindsight, tremendously depressing.

I've unfortunately lost contact with the friend who asked this, but if you happen to be reading this...thank you. That one simple question had an impact more profound on me than you intended, I'm sure, and it certainly made my mom's day.

(And I want to be very clear here: I have tremendous respect for nurses. I could never do their job, and in the times I've needed their services in emergency situations I have been beyond grateful for their skills and talents. My point is simply that doctors have [generally] spent more time in formal education and are placed on a pedestal in terms of medical jobs, and no one had ever made the assumption that my mom might be a doctor instead of a nurse.)

[..] On February 12, 2019, Governor Gavin Newsom in his first State of the State address announced that, while work would continue on the 171-mile (275 km) Central Valley segment from Bakersfield to Merced, the rest of the system would be indefinitely postponed, citing cost overruns and delays.

Project costs have escalated significantly from an initial estimate of $33.6 billion in 2008 for the Anaheim to San Francisco section according to the 2008 business plan and a $40 billion total figure given to voters whose approval was sought in 2008. The 2008 business plan proposed a 2028 completion date for Phase 1 and a one-way fare of $55 from Los Angeles to San Francisco. In 2012, the Authority re-estimated the project's cost at $53.4 billion ($2011) or $68.4 billion (YOE). Federal funds are dependent upon rail service, though not necessarily high-speed, starting on operational rails by December 2022. In 2018, the Authority pushed estimated costs to between $63.2 billion and $98.1 billion (YOE) and delayed initial service to 2029, with Los Angeles to San Francisco service in 2033. Environment reviews for the entire San Francisco to Anaheim route would continue. The cost for Bakersfield to Merced is $12.4 billion.[..]
